Early day motions
Motions put down by MPs to put a view on record and gather support. Few are ever debated, but who signs them shows where members stand.
Signing an early day motion costs nothing and binds no one: ministers and whips do not sign them, so they mostly show the views of backbenchers. See the glossary.
