Push for Stoptober

Early day motion 1024, tabled 26 October 2026 by Jim Shannon (DUP). Signed by 2 members.

That this House encourages people to take part in Stoptober, the UK's biggest quit smoking challenge; highlights the free support services available across the UK health service to help those taking part to succeed; praises the 500 free Public Health Agency funded Stop Smoking services in Northern Ireland which are available through community pharmacies, GP practices, health trusts and community organisations; stresses the importance of support at every stage of a quit attempt; emphasises that people who stop smoking for 28 days are far more likely to quit permanently; highlights that immense progress has been made this year towards securing a Smoke Free UK with the introduction of the Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 which prohibits the sale of tobacco to anyone born on or after 1st of January 2009; encourages people who are considering taking part to consider quitting alongside someone they know as having this support can massively boost motivation and success; and calls on the Government to take action to reduce the appeal of e-cigarettes to children by introducing controls on flavouring and advertising.
