Supporting small businesses and the high street
Early day motion 1014, tabled 21 October 2026 by James McMurdock (Independent). Signed by 1 member.
That this House recognises the vital contribution of small businesses, independent retailers and hospitality businesses to local economies and employment; expresses concern that high operating costs and business taxation place pressure on the viability of high street businesses; believes that the forthcoming Budget must deliver meaningful and predictable tax relief for small businesses; calls on the Chancellor of the Exchequer to reduce the business rates burden on smaller high street premises, review the impact of VAT and energy costs on small hospitality businesses, and provide greater certainty for businesses planning to invest and employ staff; and further calls for a fairer competitive environment for domestic retailers facing competition from overseas online sellers.
