Somerset Sumo Club in Glastonbury

Early day motion 1044, tabled 27 October 2026 by Sarah Dyke (Liberal Democrat). Signed by 1 member.

That this House congratulates Joe Andrews, a sumo wrestler and personal trainer, on founding Somerset Sumo Club, believed to be the first sumo club in the South West of England, based at Average Joe Fitness Studio in Glastonbury and affiliated to the British Combat Association; commends Mr Andrews’s work to raise the profile of the sport across the region and to challenge the misconception that only heavyweights can compete, opening sumo up to people of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds; recognises the vital role community sports clubs play in bringing people together and improving physical and mental health; wishes Mr Andrews and Somerset Sumo Club every success in growing the sport locally; and calls on the Government to boost participation in sport and physical activity by investing in leisure centres, swimming pools and other grassroots facilities, and by backing the community sports clubs that keep them thriving.
