Somerset Prostate Support Association and rural access to PSA testing
Early day motion 1065, tabled 28 October 2026 by Sarah Dyke (Liberal Democrat). Signed by 1 member.
That this House congratulates the Somerset Prostate Support Association, chaired by Peter Hopwood, on running free PSA testing events across Somerset, ten of which have taken place in 2026, giving men the chance to be tested close to home without needing a GP appointment or travelling miles to be seen, which is vital in rural communities; notes that although the tests are free to those attending, the events depend wholly on fundraising; commends David Grindley of the Cross Keys Inn in Lydford-on-Fosse for raising £6,300 for the Association’s testing events through a summer beer festival; believes that early detection of the UK’s most common cancer should be the responsibility of the NHS, not left entirely to the generosity of local charities and communities; wishes the Somerset Prostate Support Association every success in its work to detect prostate cancer earlier and save lives; and calls on the Government to ensure that its targeted prostate cancer screening programme, due to begin in 2027, is fully accessible to men in rural communities, to keep the case for wider screening under urgent review, and to introduce a legal guarantee, backed by investment, that every cancer patient starts treatment within 62 days of an urgent referral.
